Choosing a plasticizer or resin grade: grade comparisons, application guides and substitutions.
In PVC blood tubing tested for pediatric bypass, switching the plasticizer from DEHP to TOTM cut migration by a factor of roughly 350 (Eckert et al., Chemosphere, 2015). The polymer did not change. Only the ester did. Tubing specifiers weighing…
A DOA-based cable compound that passes the cold-bend test on day one can still stiffen and shed plasticizer after two summers in a hot conduit. That aging gap, not the day-one flexibility, is what replacing DOA really turns on. Dioctyl…
Ask two suppliers to quote DINCH and, for most of its commercial life, you have been asking essentially one company. BASF’s Hexamoll plant at Ludwigshafen carried the product almost alone, until Evonik added capacity at Marl; DOTP comes off a…
A drum of PVC resin and a sack of PVC compound sit on the same shelf at the same supplier, and the compound costs $200 to $400 more per metric ton. The easy read is that compound is just pricier…
DINCH is DINP with its benzene ring hydrogenated, so the two plasticize PVC in much the same way, and the choice between them depends mostly on regulation and hazard. DINP is restricted in children’s toys and childcare articles and in…
Six chemistry families now cover the REACH and RoHS compliant DEHP replacements for flexible PVC. The shortlist runs across terephthalate, ortho-phthalate, cyclohexanoate, adipate, trimellitate, and citrate. The application sector pushing the substitution governs the shortlist more than the chemistry itself.…
DOA’s aliphatic adipate ester chain stays mobile down to about -55°C; DINP’s planar phthalate ring stiffens around -25°C — that single chemistry difference is why specifiers reach for DOA the moment a cold-flex spec lands on the desk. The reflex…
A specifier sourcing flexible PVC for a wire-and-cable line walks into the DOA-vs-DEHP question with a different binding constraint than a procurement engineer pricing a high-volume general-purpose compound, who in turn faces a different constraint from a medical-device formulator working…
Bio-based plasticizers differ from traditional plasticizers in where their carbon comes from — vegetable oils, fatty acids and citric acid instead of petrochemical anhydrides and alcohols — not in any built-in advantage in efficiency, migration, heat resistance or safety. In…
DEHCH gels PVC roughly twice as fast as DINCH. That single processing difference tells you more about these two cyclohexanoates than any spec sheet will. Both are non-phthalate, both sit on a cyclohexane core, and both pass REACH — yet…
Manufacturers facing DEHP restrictions often hear the same advice: switch to DINCH. But that recommendation ignores a critical variable — your application sector. Medical devices, children’s toys, and food contact packaging have clear regulatory mandates pushing toward DINCH or other…
That sticky residue on your car seats or the fog forming on your windshield during summer drives? Both trace back to the same root cause: plasticizer migration from synthetic leather. The plasticizer is separating from the PVC, causing the material…
