DOTP vs DINCH: Choosing the Right Non-Phthalate Plasticizer

Ask two suppliers to quote DINCH and, for most of its commercial life, you have been asking essentially one company. BASF’s Hexamoll plant at Ludwigshafen carried the product almost alone, until Evonik added capacity at Marl; DOTP comes off a broad, multi-supplier commodity base.

That asymmetry shapes the decision before a single migration number is read, yet most spec sheets treat the two as interchangeable non-phthalate alternatives. The choice is really a compliance-scope question, not a performance one: DINCH earns its premium only where a named food-contact, medical, or toy regulation rewards its migration profile.

Everywhere else, DOTP clears the same bar at lower cost and from more suppliers.

How DOTP and DINCH Perform at Equal Loading

At an equal 50 phr loading, DOTP is not the weaker plasticizer — it is marginally the stronger one. The one directly comparable head-to-head is a 2018 benchmark in Kunststoffe international, which ran both at a constant 50 phr in PVC K-70.

That test measured DOTP losing 22.5% of its weight after seven days at 100 °C, against 26% for DINCH. DOTP also gave the slightly softer compound on the Shore A scale.

The molecular structure explains why the volatility result surprises people. DINCH carries the higher molecular mass — 425 against 391 g/mol — which normally predicts lower loss.

Weight loss at heat measures volatility, though, not extraction into a liquid, and those two axes split between these products.

Neither is a fast processor. In the same 2018 benchmark, DINCH absorbed into suspension PVC more slowly than DOTP, so a line moving toward DINCH should expect gelation to run later, not sooner.

Anyone treating DINCH as the higher-performance default is buying a reputation the equal-loading data does not support.

DOTP vs DINCH on Migration and Food-Contact Compliance

For general food contact, DOTP and DINCH hold identical compliance standing. Under EU 10/2011 Annex I, DINCH (FCM 775) and DOTP/DEHTP (FCM 798) share one group restriction and a single group migration limit of 60 mg/kg.

The regulation itself does not rank one plasticizer above the other.

Both then clear that limit by a wide margin. A 2022 review by BASF scientists in Food and Chemical Toxicology put DOTP, DINCH and related esters between 0.02 and 0.165 mg/kg into aqueous and low-alcohol simulants, orders of magnitude below the group limit.

DEHP, by comparison, sits at 1.5 mg/kg with narrow use conditions — that is what a real regulatory gap looks like, and neither product here has one against the other.

Migration rate depends on the extraction medium, and that is the single axis where the two genuinely diverge. The consolidated Annex I entry for DINCH even carries a restriction note against fatty-food contact under simulants D1 and D2. That undercuts the reflex to reach for DINCH whenever an application feels sensitive.

One friction point is naming, not chemistry. DOTP is a terephthalate, chemically outside the restricted ortho-phthalate class at the heart of the phthalate versus non-phthalate distinction.

Some spec committees still exclude it on the word “phthalate” alone — a decision that changes sourcing without changing compliance reality. DINCH never has to have that conversation.

DOTP vs DINCH on Cost and Supply

On cost, DOTP wins on two fronts at once — a lower base price and a deeper bench of suppliers. Price gaps among DEHP alternatives often run below 10%. Through 2025, DOTP stayed flat to soft under import pressure and oversupply, while the 2026 outlook points to ample supply against flat demand.

DINCH held a premium tied to its narrow production base.

That base is specific and nameable. BASF doubled Hexamoll capacity to 200,000 t/y at Ludwigshafen in its mid-2010s expansion, and Evonik’s ELATUR CH at Marl now stands as the second European source.

For a dual-sourcing audit, two named plants read very differently from DOTP’s commodity base.

Switching between the two is less disruptive than it sounds, since both run at similar loadings. A DOTP line can often trial DINCH without a ground-up reformulation — the real cost is requalifying against the target regulation, not the mixing itself.

For a general-purpose compound whose spec names no extraction-specific limit, that supply depth usually decides it — whether the DOTP comes from Bastone or one of many other producers. Compare phr-adjusted grades for the application before committing either way.

Where DINCH’s Premium Actually Pays Off

DINCH earns its premium in two places: blood-contact devices and plastisols that sit before processing. In both, the reason is specific — not a general “sensitive-application” halo.

Blood contact is the clearest case. One medical-materials comparison scores DINCH decisively better on hemolysis, and blood bags favor it; Evonik positions its ELATUR CH grade explicitly for close-human-contact and medical uses.

Even so, the US medical-device sector converting off DEHP narrowed to a DOTP, TOTM and ATBC shortlist and largely left DINCH off it — mostly on supply grounds, despite the hemolysis edge. DINCH’s medical win is the blood-contact carve-out, not medical tubing broadly.

Plastisols are the other genuine case. The 2018 benchmark rated DINCH excellent on plastisol viscosity, both initially and over a week of storage.

That shelf stability suits flexible PVC plastisols processed days after mixing — a legitimate, non-regulatory reason for a plastisol shop to pay more.

The environmental halo has footnotes worth knowing. A 2014 Healthy Building Network assessment noted that DINCH uses DINP in its manufacture and is less biodegradable and more persistent than DINP.

So “greener” is a reputation with caveats, not a settled fact. Outside these carve-outs — cable, flooring, automotive interiors, general food contact — both plasticizers clear the same bar.

The Bottom Line

Classify the extraction environment before you compare prices. If a named regulation puts the part in blood contact, or a plastisol needs shelf stability, DINCH’s premium buys something real. If not, you are paying more for identical compliance standing and a thinner supplier base.

The DOTP-versus-DINCH question is not which plasticizer performs better. The 2018 benchmark says DOTP gives up nothing at equal loading; the real question is whether your specification names the food-contact, medical, or toy conditions that reward DINCH’s migration profile.

That reframes the premium as insurance against a specific, named risk — worth buying when the risk is on your line, wasteful when it is not.
