Plasticizer migration and how to detect, test and reduce it; PVC defects such as blooming, fish eyes and plate-out.
The white deposit that rebuilds on your die within hours of every clean-off is not made of the compound running through the machine. That finding, from a Loughborough University analysis of eight deposits taken off commercial rigid-PVC lines, upends the…
A QC engineer writing a flexible-PVC migration spec needs the D-number and revision year, not a methods narrative. Seven ASTM standards cover plasticizer migration, each addressing one failure mode — vinyl-to-coating transfer, sealant bleed, immersion extraction, volatile loss, cold-flex stiffness…
A flexible PVC tubing specifier swaps DEHP for ATBC to clean up the regulatory profile, and the polycarbonate luer cracks within the first week of service. Paul Kroushl at Teknor Apex documented this exact failure in 2016: at 3% strain…
Your QC lab can run GC-MS, HPLC, and ATR-FTIR in the same shift — so which one actually answers the migration question your customer is asking? For DOA (dioctyl adipate, also written DEHA in IUPAC-aligned literature), the honest answer is…
Many PVC processors assume that when they receive resin of a specific K-value, their formulation should remain unchanged without testing. This assumption causes problems. K-value variations between lots shift melt viscosity enough to turn a proven formulation into one that…
A compounder sees white residue on freshly extruded PVC profiles. Assuming plasticizer migration, they reduce the plasticizer level by 5 phr. Two weeks later, the bloom is worse, and the profiles have become brittle. The actual cause was lubricant excess…
Plasticizers are chemicals that keep PVC soft and flexible, but they don’t stay put. Over time, they leak out of the plastic, causing everything from sticky car dashboards to cracking medical tubing. The good news? Once you understand the six…
Plasticizer migration happens when the chemicals that make plastics flexible start leaking out of the material. You can spot this problem through visible signs on the surface and physical changes in how the plastic feels and behaves. Visual Indicators of…
Testing for plasticizer migration involves measuring how much plasticizer moves out of plastic materials over time through specialized laboratory methods. These tests help manufacturers ensure their products are safe and will maintain their properties during use. Plasticizers are chemicals added…
Plasticizer migration — flexible-PVC additives slowly leaving the compound over time — is one of the most common formulation failures a compounder has to design against. It shows up as surface tack, hardness drift, and premature embrittlement in cable, film,…
Plasticizer migration is the movement of plasticizer out of a flexible PVC compound into whatever is on the other side of its surface — the air, a solid it is pressed against, or a liquid it is immersed in. It…
Yes, plasticizers are leaching out of plastic products right now—from the container holding your leftovers to the vinyl flooring beneath your feet. These chemicals, which make plastics soft and flexible, don’t stay put. They migrate out of the material and…
