Formolon S-70 PVC Suspension Resin by Formosa — K71 for Flexible Hose, Film and Cable

Formolon S-70 is a PVC homopolymer suspension resin produced by Formosa Plastics, with a K-value of 71 and a degree of polymerization of 1300.

High porosity and good plasticizer absorption make the grade suited to extrusion and calendering of flexible products — flexible sheets and films, hoses, artificial leather, and wire and cable.

BASTONE supplies Formolon S-70 to converters and compounders worldwide.

Description

Formolon S-70 is a polyvinyl chloride homopolymer manufactured by suspension polymerization. The resin is not a paste resin and is not intended for plastisol work — it is a dry-blend grade for compounding on conventional extrusion and calendering lines. BASTONE supplies the grade under its original Formolon brand; Formosa Plastics manufactures it.

The K-value of 71 (GB/T 5761-2018) and degree of polymerization of 1300 place S-70 in the medium-molecular-weight range that most flexible PVC compounders work with. A chain length at 1300 gives enough mechanical strength and elongation for film, sheet and cable insulation, while keeping melt viscosity low enough that the compound processes on standard calender rolls and extruder screws without excessive shear heating. Converters running a K70-K71 base resin will find S-70 drops into existing recipes without major screw or temperature rework.

High porosity is the property that matters most on the dry-blend line. Porous particles absorb liquid plasticizer into the grain rather than leaving it on the surface, so a 40-80 phr formulation reaches a free-flowing dry blend in a shorter mixer cycle and with less risk of plasticizer bleed in the hopper. Apparent density of 0.50 ± 0.03 g/cm³ (GB/T 20022-2005) reflects the open particle structure and feeds consistently through metering equipment.

Two purity figures carry downstream consequences. Volatiles at max 0.3 % (GB/T 2914-2008) limit moisture-driven bubbles and plate-out during high-output extrusion, which matters for clear film and thin-wall hose where a single void is a reject. Residual VCM at max 1.0 ppm (GB/T 29874-2013) keeps the resin inside the thresholds buyers face for food-contact and medical-adjacent converting, and is the first number most European and Japanese customers ask for. Finished products made from S-70 show high transparency, so the grade suits clear and lightly tinted applications where a hazy base resin would force a formulation change.

BASTONE sources Formolon S-70 through an established supply chain and ships it alongside plasticizers from its own production — DINP, DOTP, DOP, DOA and TOTM — so a buyer can order resin and plasticizer against a single contract and a single shipment.

Applications

Flexible sheets and films. Calendered flexible sheet lives or dies on optical clarity and gauge consistency. A K71 resin melts and banks on the calender at a workable viscosity, and the high transparency of S-70 products means the base resin does not consume the clarity budget before stabilizer and plasticizer are added. Volatiles capped at 0.3 % reduce pinholing in thin gauges.

Hoses and tubing. Garden hose, suction hose and clear reinforced tubing all run at high plasticizer loadings. Porous S-70 grain takes 50-80 phr of DINP or DOP into the particle during hot mixing, which shortens dry-blend cycles and prevents the wet, sticky blend that causes bridging in extruder hoppers. Degree of polymerization 1300 holds enough tensile strength to resist kinking at wall thicknesses converters actually specify.

Artificial leather. Coated and calendered synthetic leather needs a resin that accepts high plasticizer levels and fillers without losing surface uniformity. Good plasticizer absorption keeps the compound homogeneous through the embossing step, and the medium molecular weight gives the hand feel and drape that upholstery and footwear buyers expect.

Wire and cable. Insulation and jacketing compounds for cable carry 30-60 phr plasticizer plus stabilizer, filler and flame retardant. S-70 absorbs the liquid phase cleanly, and residual VCM at max 1.0 ppm supports compliance work for cable sold into regulated markets. Apparent density of 0.50 ± 0.03 g/cm³ feeds predictably on gravimetric compounding lines, which matters when insulation wall tolerance is measured in hundredths of a millimeter.

Why Choose BASTONE

BASTONE carefully sources Formolon S-70 through an established supply chain network. BASTONE does not manufacture the grade — Formosa Plastics does — and the page states as much plainly, because buyers comparing resin offers need to know exactly whose product they are receiving and against which TDS it will be tested.

Quality control draws on the group's own chemical expertise. BASTONE operates four production sites and an R&D center for its plasticizer and additive business, and the same technical staff vet sourced material, review each COA against the published specification, and resolve technical questions before a container ships rather than after it lands.

One-stop procurement is the practical advantage. A flexible PVC compounder buying S-70 also buys plasticizer, stabilizer and filler. BASTONE supplies PVC resin and plasticizers from a single commercial entity, coordinates loading so resin and plasticizer arrive together, and works with buyers on trade terms and documentation that suit their customs and payment setup.
