Formolon S-65 PVC Suspension Resin by Formosa — K66 for Calendering and Extrusion

Formolon S-65 is a PVC homopolymer suspension resin produced by Formosa Plastics (FPC), with a K-value of 66 and a degree of polymerization of 1050.

The resin absorbs plasticizer readily and holds thermal stability through calendering and extrusion, which makes it a working grade for rigid and flexible sheets and films, artificial leather, foamed products, and flexible profile extrusion such as tubing and wire and cable insulation.

BASTONE supplies Formolon S-65 under its original FPC branding alongside the plasticizers that go into the same compound.

Description

Formolon S-65 is a straight PVC homopolymer made by suspension polymerization — not a paste or dispersion grade. Suspension polymerization builds porous resin particles that take up liquid plasticizer during dry blending rather than requiring the shear and heat a non-porous particle would need. The distinction matters at the compounding stage: a formulator running a flexible compound at 40–60 phr plasticizer needs the resin to reach a free-flowing dry blend before the material ever sees the extruder.

The K-value of 66 (GB/T 5761-2018) and the degree of polymerization of 1050 place S-65 in the medium molecular weight band that covers both rigid and flexible work. Molecular weight at that level gives enough chain length for mechanical strength and melt elasticity in calendered film, while staying low enough that melt viscosity remains manageable in profile extrusion. A resin pushed much higher in K-value starts demanding more heat and more plasticizer to process; one pushed lower loses tensile and tear performance in thin gauges.

Apparent density of 0.53 ± 0.03 g/cm³ (GB/T 20022-2005) is the practical consequence of that porous particle structure. The relatively open packing is what gives the resin its plasticizer absorption, and it also sets feeding behavior in the extruder throat — consistent apparent density from lot to lot keeps throughput stable without re-tuning screw speed.

Two purity figures matter for end-use compliance and for processing cleanliness. Volatiles run at max 0.3% (GB/T 2914-2008), so the dry blend carries little moisture into the melt and the operator sees fewer voids, silver streaking, and surface blemishes in calendered sheet. Residual VCM is capped at max 1.0 ppm (GB/T 29874-2013), which is the figure buyers in food-contact packaging film, medical tubing, and regulated construction markets ask for first. Particle size is specified at max 0.01% (GB/T 21843-2008) per the TDS.

BASTONE supplies Formolon S-65 as a sourced grade and does not manufacture it. What BASTONE adds is procurement: a buyer running a flexible calendering line can take the resin and the plasticizer — DINP, DOTP, DOP, DOA, TOTM — on the same order, from the same export entity, under the same documentation set.

Applications

Rigid and flexible sheets and films. Calendering is the application where thermal stability during processing earns its keep. Sheet stock sits on hot rolls for an extended thermal history, and a resin with poor stability shows it as yellowing and plate-out. The 1050 degree of polymerization gives the melt enough strength to draw into thin gauge without holes, and the max 0.3% volatiles keeps steam voids out of the web. Running the same grade for rigid and flexible sheet also lets a converter hold one resin silo instead of two.

Artificial leather. Coating and calendered leatherette lines depend on fast, even plasticizer absorption, because an under-absorbed blend separates and leaves soft spots in the coating layer. The porous suspension particle takes the plasticizer charge during dry blending, and apparent density of 0.53 ± 0.03 g/cm³ keeps the blend consistent batch to batch. Pair S-65 with DINP where the finished skin has to stay flexible and low-fogging in automotive interior trim, or with DOTP where phthalate-free specification applies.

Foamed products. Foam needs a melt that holds gas cells without collapsing or splitting. Medium molecular weight at K66 sits in the window where melt strength supports cell walls but viscosity stays low enough for the blowing agent to expand the matrix evenly. Low volatiles matter again here: moisture carried into a foaming melt produces coarse, irregular cells.

Flexible profile extrusion, tubing, and wire and cable insulation. Extruded flexible profiles and tube run at high plasticizer loadings, so the resin has to accept the full charge and still feed as a free-flowing powder. Thermal stability through the barrel controls whether a long production run finishes without a color shift or a degraded purge. For cable insulation, the max 1.0 ppm residual VCM supports compliance work on regulated construction and appliance wiring, and DOP or DINP remain the standard plasticizer choices for general-purpose insulation while TOTM covers higher continuous service temperatures.

Why Choose BASTONE

BASTONE sources Formolon S-65 through an established supply chain network rather than producing it. The resin ships with its original Formolon branding and the Formosa Plastics specification intact — no re-labeling, no substitution with a domestic equivalent. Buyers who have specified S-65 in a qualified formulation get the grade they qualified.

Quality control draws on the group's own chemical background. BASTONE operates four production sites and one R&D center in its own manufacturing lines, and the same technical staff vet sourced material, check COA data against the specification, and handle questions when a lot behaves differently on the line than the previous one.

Procurement is the practical advantage. BASTONE's plastics division supplies plasticizers — DOP, DOTP, DINP, DOA, TOTM — and additives alongside PVC resin, so a compounder can order resin and plasticizer on one contract, with one export entity, one documentation set, and one shipment to coordinate. Trade terms stay flexible, and logistics are arranged to fit the buyer's port and schedule.
