Formolon PR-640 PVC Paste Resin Copolymer by Formosa Industries — VC/VAc, Low Gelling Temperature

Formolon PR-640 is a low molecular weight vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer paste resin produced by Formosa Industries (Ningbo) Co., Ltd., with a vinyl acetate content of 5–6% and a K-value of 70.

The copolymer structure allows plastisols to gel at lower temperatures than homopolymer pastes, which suits foaming, solid carpet backing, fabric coating, adhesives, metal coating, automotive underbody coatings, and sealants.

BASTONE supplies Formolon PR-640 under its original brand, alongside plasticizers for the same formulations.

Description

Formolon PR-640 is a dispersion-grade vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, not a PVC homopolymer. The vinyl acetate comonomer at 5–6% interrupts the regularity of the PVC chain, lowering the energy needed to fuse the resin into a continuous film. Combined with a degree of polymerization of 1,200 ± 100 and a K-value of 70, the copolymer gels at lower temperatures than a straight homopolymer paste resin of comparable molecular weight.

Lower gelling temperature changes what a coating line can do. A fabric coater running heat-sensitive substrates — polyester scrim, cotton blends, nonwovens — no longer has to push oven temperatures to the point where the carrier shrinks or discolors. Line speed can rise at the same oven setting, or oven setting can drop at the same line speed. Either way the energy cost per square meter falls.

Plastisol viscosity stays in the low-to-medium range. Measured per the TDS recipe of 100 phr resin with 60 phr DINP, Brookfield viscosity reads ≤ 7,000 cps after 2 hours aging at 25°C (No. 6 spindle, 50 rpm), and Severs flow exceeds 400 g/100 sec at 90 psi. A paste that moves freely under pressure fills knife gaps evenly, penetrates carpet backing without starving the fiber bundle, and sprays through underbody coating nozzles without pulsing. The Severs figure matters more than Brookfield for spray and pressure-fed applications, since it describes behavior at high shear rather than at the low shear of a rotating spindle.

Two further properties on the TDS carry weight in finished-part performance. Formolon PR-640 bonds well to fabrics at low temperature, so textile-backed products hold their coating without a separate primer step. Water absorption is low, which protects dimensional stability and electrical behavior in parts that see humidity or washing. Volatiles sit at ≤ 0.40% and apparent density at 0.20–0.30 g/cm³, both consistent with a dispersion resin that disperses cleanly in plasticizer without entrained moisture driving pinholes during fusion.

BASTONE sources Formolon PR-640 through its established supply chain in China and exports it as a traded grade under the Formosa brand. Buyers who need resin and plasticizer in one shipment can take PR-640 together with DINP, DOTP, DOP, DOA, or TOTM from the BASTONE plasticizer range — the TDS test recipe itself calls for DINP, so the pairing is a practical one rather than a cross-sell.

Applications

Foaming. Chemical blowing agents release gas within a temperature window, and the resin has to reach sufficient melt strength inside that window to hold the cells. The low gelling temperature of PR-640 pulls gelation closer to decomposition onset, which gives finer and more uniform cells and reduces the collapsed-cell streaking seen when a homopolymer paste gels too late.

Solid carpet backing. Backing compound has to flow into the tuft bundle before it sets, then lock the fiber in place. Severs flow above 400 g/100 sec keeps the paste moving under the doctor blade and roller pressure, and strong adhesion to fabric at low temperature anchors the backing to the primary cloth without scorching the face yarn.

Fabric coating. Coating lines for tarpaulin, protective clothing, and upholstery often run substrates that cannot take a high oven. Lower fusion temperature protects the textile, and low water absorption keeps the coated fabric stable through weathering and laundering.

Adhesives and sealants. A copolymer paste wets substrates and fuses at modest heat, which suits heat-activated adhesive films and sealant beads cured in a short, low-temperature oven pass. Viscosity at ≤ 7,000 cps allows bead extrusion and nozzle dispensing without excessive pumping pressure.

Metal coating. Coil and sheet coating on strip lines benefits from a resin that fuses before the metal reaches peak temperature. Low water absorption supports corrosion protection, since a coating that takes up less moisture passes less of it to the substrate.

Automotive underbody coatings. Underbody PVC is sprayed, so high-shear flow governs whether the gun atomizes cleanly. Severs above 400 g/100 sec supports spray application, and the copolymer fuses within typical e-coat bake cycles, avoiding a dedicated PVC oven.

Why Choose BASTONE

BASTONE sources Formolon PR-640 through an established supply chain network and ships it as the original Formosa-branded grade. BASTONE is the supplier and exporter of PR-640, not its manufacturer — the resin arrives from Formosa Industries (Ningbo) with its own documentation, and nothing about the product is reformulated or repackaged on the way through.

Quality control draws on the chemical expertise of the BASTONE group, which operates four production sites and an R&D center across its own product lines. The same technical judgment used to specify internal products is applied to vetting sourced grades: incoming lots are checked against the manufacturer's TDS values before release, so the K-value, volatiles, and plastisol viscosity a customer specifies are the ones that ship.

One-stop procurement is where sourced resin earns its place in the BASTONE catalog. A plastisol formulator needs resin and plasticizer in matched quantities on the same timeline, and BASTONE supplies both — PR-640 paste resin alongside DINP, DOTP, DOP, DOA, and TOTM. Trade terms stay flexible, and a single export entity handles the documentation and logistics coordination for the combined shipment.
