How to Clean IBC Containers After Unloading Plasticizer DINP

When handling Plasticizer DINP (Diisononyl Phthalate), it’s essential to properly clean IBC containers after unloading. DINP is a high-boiling, viscous plasticizer that can leave oily residues on container walls. If not cleaned correctly, these residues can affect the quality of the next batch or cause contamination.
This guide provides a safe and effective cleaning procedure to completely remove DINP residues from IBC tanks.

1. Step One: Solvent Cleaning with No. 2 Solvent Oil or Xylene/Toluene

After unloading Plasticizer DINP, drain any remaining liquid completely. Then use No. 2 Solvent Oil (Naphtha) or Xylene / Toluene as the primary cleaning solvent.

  • Add approximately 10–15% of the IBC volume of solvent.
  • Seal the container and shake it vigorously for 5–10 minutes to dissolve any residual DINP.
  • Drain the solvent mixture thoroughly.
  • Repeat the process if necessary until the oil film becomes minimal.

Both Naphtha and Xylene/Toluene show excellent dissolving power for DINP, effectively breaking down the oily film and cleaning the internal surfaces of the IBC.

2. Step Two: Alkali Washing with Sodium Hydroxide Solution

After the solvent cleaning, proceed with an alkali wash to eliminate any remaining oil film.
Prepare a 5–10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, optionally adding a small amount of surfactant or industrial detergent to enhance cleaning performance.

  • Heat the solution to around 50°C (122°F).
  • Pour it into the IBC container and let it soak or shake for 15–30 minutes.
  • Drain the solution and rinse the container with clean water 3–5 times, until the rinse water reaches a neutral pH (~7).

This step removes stubborn DINP residues and ensures the inner surface is completely degreased.

3. Step Three: Drying

Finally, dry the IBC container completely before reuse.

  • Allow it to air dry in a well-ventilated area, or
  • Use warm air (50–60°C) to accelerate drying.

Make sure there is no remaining odor or oil trace before refilling the IBC with any chemical product.

4. Safety and Environmental Notes

  • Perform all cleaning steps in a well-ventilated area away from open flames.
  • Wear protective gloves, goggles, and a mask when handling solvents or NaOH solution.
  • Collect waste solvent and alkali solutions for proper disposal according to local regulations.
